Suttons Bay Eyes Another State Finals Trip
SUTTONS BAY – The Suttons Bay football program is one win away from reaching the MHSAA 8-player Division 1 state championship game for a second straight year.
The Norsemen (9-0) welcome in Inland Lakes (8-1) for a state semifinal Saturday afternoon.
Suttons Bay has gone 30-3 over the last three seasons and fell to Colon (26-14) in last year’s Division 1 title game in Marquette.
“I know we want to get back and have things go the other way and win it this time so that’s been a motivation all year one game at a time, but we’ve wanted to get back there all year,” Suttons Bay senior Michael Wittman said.
The Norsemen recorded playoff wins over Manistee Catholic Central (49-6), Whittemore-Prescott (44-0) and Gaylord St. Mary (38-22) prior to the two-month shutdown.
“Each week is going to be a new challenge and I think we just have to focus on the week ahead not to look too far ahead,” Suttons Bay coach Garrick Opie. “Just do what we can as a team to be the best we can be, and continue to move forward.”
The upstart Bulldogs are in their first season of 8-player football and had never won a MHSAA football postseason title of any kind prior to a regional title win via forfeit over Pickford.
The winner of Saturday’s semifinal will face either Martin or Adrian Lenawee Christian in the state championship game next weekend.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 1 p.m.
