Two Area Football Coaches Named Finalists for Lions Coach of the Year

Two area high school football coaches have been named finalists for the 2020 Detroit Lions Michigan High School Football Coach of the Year.

Cadillac’s Cody Mallory and Josh Sellers of Traverse City St. Francis are among 18 finalists for the award.

Sellers and the Gladiators (9-2) will face New Lothrop (10-0) in the Division 7 state championship game at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ford Field.

St. Francis is making its first state title game appearance since winning the Division 7 championship in 2009. The Gladiators held off Cass City for a 13-12 win in last week’s state semifinal.

Under Mallory’s direction, Cadillac (8-2) will make its first-ever state title game appearance when it faces Detroit Country Day (8-2) in the Division 4 final at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Vikings made their first semifinal appearance last Saturday, upsetting 2018 Division 4 state champion Edwardsburg 28-26.

The winning coach will receive a $3,000 donation for his school’s football program and will be nominated for the Don Shula High School Football Coach of the Year award.
