Legendary Harbor Springs Basketball Coach Passes Away

Legendary Harbor Springs High School basketball coach Charlie Paige passed away Tuesday. He was 90.

Coach PaigePaige began coaching basketball at Harbor Springs in 1956 and coached the Rams for 27 years, posting a 401-168 record.

Paige’s Harbor Springs teams won 17 conference and district championships and nine regional titles and finished as Class D state runners-up in 1976 and 1974. He was named Coach of the Year by the Detroit News in 1976.

In addition to basketball, Paige also spent time coaching football and baseball.

“He was definitely like a second father. He was a mentor definitely,” said former player and Harbor Springs girls basketball coach Gary Morse. “I went to him, he reviewed all of my game films when I was coaching and we would call. I remember he’d make the call and say, ‘On this play, what were you thinking?’ He’d really let you have it. ”

Paige was a three-sport athlete at Eastern Michigan.

He is a member of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, Michigan High School Coaches Association, Eastern Michigan and Trenton High School Sports Halls of Fame.
