Vasa Ski Club Wins Michigan High School Ski Championships

The Vasa Ski Club won the 2021 Michigan High School Cross Country Ski Championships over the weekend, with a team total score of 593. Copper Country Ski Tigers came in second place with a score of 586. The Vasa boys team also came in first place, while the girls team came in second place.

The Vasa Ski Club had William Haapala finish in first place overall individually for the boys. They also had the top girls finisher, with Arielle Jean leading the way.

“It was great this year to finally as a team win the state title. We tied last year, but this year, we outright won it,” Haapala said.

The Vasa Ski Club consists of student-athletes from Traverse City West, Traverse City Central, Traverse City St. Francis and Elk Rapids. Last season, the Traverse City team tied with Copper Country. As a combined team with St. Francis, this title felt special for the group.

“It just felt like a bigger deal,” Jean said. “Like a lot of us went through all the middle school programs through the Vasa Ski Clubs, so it felt really special to represent the people that taught us how to ski. I think it was really special to us to finally win.”
