Benzie Central’s Hunter Jones Wins Indoor Track National Championship

Benzie Central sophomore Hunter Jones brought home a new medal over the weekend, capturing the adidas Indoor Nationals 5,000-meter championship at Virginia Beach.

With the win, Jones broke the sophomore record for the fastest time in the nation at high school indoor track meet with his time of 14:49.76.

That time is now the fastest in the nation of any high school runner to date in 2021.

Normally Jones leads the pack at Division 3 meets here in Michigan, but he says the competition on the big stage was much harder and that it still hasn’t sank in that he is now a national champion.

“I really didn’t think it was achievable to do that, to win,” Jones said. “It was weird. Everyone was close to me and there was actually runners catching up to us, so it was a lot different than just racing in Michigan. I thought that going down there was just good to have the experience and now it will make me a better in the future.”

Jones now prepares for the high school outdoor track and field season starting March 26.
