Cedarville Awarded District Championship

CEDARVILLE – With multiple girls basketball teams dropping out of the state tournament because of COVID-19 issues or low roster numbers, one district champion has already been crowned without having competed in a playoff game yet.

Cedarville has advanced to next week’s Division 4 regionals after Pickford, DeTour and Mackinac Island were forced to bow out of a district tournament.

The Trojans last took the court on March 18 in a win over Mackinaw City and were looking forward to competing this week against rival Pickford.

“They love to compete, and obviously Pickford is a rival of ours,” Cedarville coach Brad Causley said. “If things worked out, we were looking forward to having that third matchup against them because we split with them in the regular season. There was a lot of disappointment with the girls as well. This is definitely not the way they wanted to win a district championship either.”

Cedarville (11-2) awaits the winner of Wednesday’s Rudyard/Newberry district final.

The regional semifinal is slated for Monday in Sault Ste. Marie.
