Chippewa Hills Alum Wins NAIA National Championship
Chippewa Hills alum and Lakeview native Nolan Saxton made history over the weekend by becoming the first Reinhardt (Ga.) University wrestler to win a NAIA individual national championship.
A former MHSAA state champion and four-time state place winner, Saxton was the top seed at 157 pounds and took down Giovanni Bonilla of Grand View (Iowa) University by a 15-4 major decision Saturday night to win the title at the 2021 NAIA Wrestling National Championships.
“It sounds crazier and crazier every day I would say, but I don’t know if it’s hit me yet,” Saxton said. “To be completely honest, nothing’s really changed yet. It’s a weight off my shoulders. A relief, Something I’ve dreamed about my whole life. As far as being able to break it down and understand it completely, I don’t think I’m there yet.”
A senior, Saxton was a 2020 NAIA All-American and 2020 NAIA Scholar All-American.
Saxton has an extra year of eligibility because of COVID-19 pandemic.
Following college, Saxton plans on becoming a teacher and wrestling coach.
