Lake Leelanau St. Mary Makes History with District Title

LAKE LEELANAU — The Lake Leelanau St. Mary boys basketball team will compete in the regional tournament on Tuesday against Ellsworth in what has already been a historic season.

With their win last week over Leland, the Eagles secured their first district title since 1973.

“It means everything to these kids and everything to this community. I mean 48 years is a long time, so it was a special moment,” St. Mary head coach Matt Barnowski said.

The special moment also extended to the crowd, which had members of that 1973 team in attendance that night.

“It’s been 48 years since we’ve seen a number or a year put up on those banners so it was really special, especially to beat our rivals,” sophomore Dylan Barnowski said. “We had former players of the team in the crowd, and they’re family to us. My grandpa was on that team, Sean’s uncle was on the team, so we really wanted it this year.”

The Eagles will look to keep its tournament run alive when they tip off against Ellsworth on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
