LSSU Men, Women Prepare for GLIAC Tournament

The Lake Superior State men’s and women’s basketball teams open the 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday.

The LSSU (8-10) men play host to Northwood (6-12) Tuesday evening. The Lakers split the two-game regular season series with the Timberwolves.

First round tournament games will be played at campus locations while the quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds are hosted by Purdue Northwest.

Quarterfinal and semifinal games are set for Thursday and Friday. A practice day is scheduled for Saturday with the championship game on Sunday.

“Every team in our conference has had these tradeoffs from one game to the next when playing back-to-back nights and less than 20 hours of recovery. It’s been interesting,” LSSU coach Steve Hettinga said. “All the coaches in the beginning of the year, we all would have taken it to get 18 games in and play in the tournament. We all would have voted “yes” for that.”

The winner of Tuesday’s first round game will face top-seed Wayne State at 11 a.m. Thursday.

For the women’s game, the Lakers travel to Detroit to take on Wayne State. LSSU (1-17) opened its season back in January against Wayne State, with the Warriors sweeping the two-game series.

Tuesday’s winner will face four-seed Saginaw Valley State.

The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m. while the men tip off at 6:30 p.m.
