Sault Ste. Marie Native Calder’s Hat Trick Lifts LSSU to WCHA Tournament Title

MANKATO, Minn. – Lake Superior State made it all the way through the WCHA Tournament to the championship game on Saturday evening against Northern Michigan University.

The two teams have played four times this season, and the Lakers were 3-4 in those games.

After the first period, Lake Superior State jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

By the end of the second period, LSSU was up 4-1.

In the final period, both teams added 2 goals apiece.

Lake Superior State won the WCHA Tournament Championship 6-3 against Northern Michigan.

The goals were scored by Dustin Manz, Brandon Puricelli, Jacob Nordqvist, and Sault Ste. Marie’s Ashton Calder added a hat trick.

The Lakers get an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey National Tournament. This will be their first appearance in the tournament in 25 years.

Their next opponent will be announced on Sunday at 7 pm in their selection show.
