Bellaire Preps for Saginaw Nouvel, D4 State Quarterfinals
BELLAIRE – Fresh off its second Division 4 regional championship in three years, the Bellaire girls basketball team is one win away from reaching the state semifinals.
Bellaire (16-3) will take on Saginaw Nouvel (18-1) in a state quarterfinal Monday at Lake City.
The Eagles were missing several key members of their roster in Wednesday’s regional final and are hoping to have most of their roster intact come Monday.
“Just get healthy and get another player back tomorrow and hopefully another one and two more players back tomorrow and we’ll be back at her and get prepared for whoever we see,” Bellaire coach Brad Fischer said.
“Just sticking together and believing in each other and playing good defense,” added Bellaire senior Katie Decker. “We can play with that and we’re normally a team that pushes the ball so just learning how to get back and not just stay and try and get the tips will for sure help in in quarterfinals.”
Bellaire will face a Nouvel team that is making its first quarterfinal appearance since falling to Flint Hamady in a 2015 Class C quarterfinal. The Panthers went 19-5 a year ago and reached a Division 4 regional final before the remainder of the postseason was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nouvel’s lone loss this winter was a 40-37 defeat at the hands of Tri-Valley Conference West champion Standish-Sterling back on March 16. Since then, the Panthers have won five straight, including a 53-26 victory over Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart in Wednesday’s regional final.
The winner of the Nouvel-Bellaire quarterfinal advances to face the winner of the Petersburg Summerfield-Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes quarterfinal in Wednesday’s state semifinal at Van Andel Arena.
