McBain Preps for D3 Quarterfinals, Iron Mountain

MCBAIN – With the final week of the high school boys basketball season upon us, McBain finds itself one win away from reaching the state semifinals for the first time since 2016.

In a battle of unbeateans, McBain will face 2019 Division 3 state runner-up Iron Mountain in a Division 3 quarterfinal Tuesday at Lake City.

After getting through the district tournament with relative ease, the Ramblers took down a pair of tough opponents in Glen Lake and previously unbeaten Beaverton in the regional tournament.021921 Mcbain Lake City Bbb20

The road to the Breslin Center doesn’t get an easier this week for the Ramblers (16-0) as the Mountaineers and one of the state’s best players in Southern Illinois commit Foster Wonders make the make the long trek down to Lake City.

While Iron Mountain (17-0) is tasked with a more than five hour trip, McBain will make the short 15-minute jaunt up M-66, something the Ramblers are hoping to take advantage of.

“It’s almost an advantage because we’ve played there so much,” McBain senior Kaiden McGillis said. “I think we’re going to be very comfortable. Having our district and regional at Houghton Lake was helpful, too. Kind of get used to the court. Kind of like home court advantage.”

“We only have to travel like 15-20 minutes to get to the quarterfinal, so pretty thankful for that,” added Connor Murphy.

The winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal will face the winner of the Grand Rapids Covenant Christian-Schoolcraft quarterfinal in a state semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Thursday from the Breslin Center.

Tuesday’s game from Lake City tips at 7 p.m.
