Ferris State Men’s, Women’s Tennis Programs Prep for NCAA Regionals
BIG RAPIDS – The Ferris State men’s and women’s tennis programs are continuing their impressive seasons this weekend in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
The men’s team (15-0) is seeded third in the five-team regional and will take on second seed Southwest (Mo.) Baptist (17-8) at 11 a.m. Sunday. The women’s team (16-1) also received the third seed and faces second seed Southwest Baptist (18-6) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
“You know, going into this weekend, playing some top 10 teams in the country, you know, we don’t feel like we’re the underdog, we feel like the match is ours and that we can compete with anybody,” Ferris State coach Mark Doren said. “We’re a school with a lot of tradition in tennis, and we’ve been very successful for many, many years and I think that they’ve taken on that pride to be able to continue that success.”
“When you see all the banners around, like being able to put our names out there, we feel that we keep the tradition on by doing good this year,” Ferris State senior Mathis Guerre said.
While the men’s team is making its sixth straight NCAA tournament appearance, the women are in the postseason for the first time since 2015.
“It’s amazing, it’s crazy for us, it’s really exciting,” said Ferris State junior Patricia Martin Gomez. “We’ve been very positive and we’ve worked very hard for this moment and we’re gonna give our 100 percent until we shake our opponents’ hand.
“We need high intensity, obviously positive thoughts, and just work for every point like it was the last of our lives.”
The NCAA Division II Midwest Regional runs Friday through Monday at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
