Mesick Baseball, Softball Both Ranked in the Top 10
MESICK — The Mesick baseball and softball teams are both having great seasons this year, as both teams are now ranked in the top 10 of Division 4 with the postseason just around the corner.
The Bulldogs’ softball team holds a 26-5 record and won their conference for the first time since 2010.
“It was super special. That was definitely one of our goals this year,” Mesick junior Mattie Akom said. “We were all super pumped. We had a really tough game for our last one and we had a couple road bumps along the way, but we’re super excited that we got to make history this year, so it was awesome.”
The eighth-ranked Bulldogs had an impressive 22-game win streak included in that success.
“They don’t really get down in close games or losses. They bounce right back,” Mesick softball coach Dave Feriend said. “Winning districts, that was our goal from the start. We don’t really talk about it a whole lot. We like to take it one pitch at a time, win the next pitch and know what we’re doing and go from there.”
The baseball team is also ranked No. 8 in Division 4. They hold a 19-6-3 record, which has them in second place of the conference behind Marion, another team ranked in the state.
“We’re a pretty young team, Mesick senior Gabe Parrish said. “Only four seniors on the team and we got a lot of good players so I think if we keep doing what we’re doing, we can win districts.”
“We’ve always had high expectations because in the past, our school’s always been really good at baseball,” Mesick senior Cole Spencer said. “In ’82, we won states. We’ve always had that shadow, I guess, so we’ve always wanted to do good and this year we wanted to excel.”
