Newaygo Names Allison New Football Coach, Athletic Director

NEWAYGO — Following board approval on Monday, Newaygo officially announced the hire of Mike Allison as the school’s next athletic director and head football coach.

Allison comes to Newaygo after coaching at Alma College since 2018. He was responsible for coaching the tight ends and working with the offensive line, along with serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

“I felt like we definitely will be able to field a full team and have support,” Allison said. “But at the same time, like I said, that community support, I’ve had experiences at like Merrill and just the fact when you can have a whole town behind a team, it’s a pretty cool thing.”

He is a graduate of Alma, where he played four seasons as a linebacker for the Scots.

Allison also has experience coaching at the high school level. In 2014, he coached at Shepherd as the wide receivers and defensive backs coach. He was the head varsity coach at Ashley from 2012-13. Prior to those roles, he also was the JV defensive coordinator at Livonia Franklin for one season out of college and then he joined Farwell with the same role in 2003. He spent six seasons at Merrill as the defensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

He takes over for Scott Van Essen, who became the school’s athletic director and head football coach in 2017. The Lions went 22-16 during that time, making the playoffs in all four years. They had a winning season in three of the last four seasons, with this past season as their only down year at 2-5. Newaygo last won a district in 2012.
