Gaylord’s Postseason Run Ends in Semifinal Loss to Owosso
EAST LANSING — Gaylord made its first semifinal appearance since 1991 against Owosso on Thursday, but the Blue Devils struggled to get a hit, losing 2-1.
Owosso pitcher Macy Irelan, who is committed to play softball at Kent State, held a no-hitter until the fifth inning when Gaylord’s Addison Wangler reached first base safely on a bunt.
The Blue Devils also made it interesting by scoring a run in the seventh inning, but Irelan sealed the victory with her eighth strikeout.
“We just came up short,” Gaylord coach Abe Cruz said. “You know, today was one of those days we played a phenomenal team, but again these girls know how to play, know how to think the game. And yes, they play like juniors and seniors, but it’s gonna be for three more years or four. So, I’m proud of the girls and we’ll be back down here again.”
Gaylord finished the season 41-2, and the Blue Devils graduate zero seniors, returning all 16 players next season.
