Johannesburg-Lewiston’s Baker Makes History at Powerlifting State Meet

JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg-Lewiston senior Henry Baker broke two records while competing at the USPA Powerlifting State Meet earlier this year.

Baker, who weighs just 132 pounds, broke his own state record in bench press by lifting 265 pounds. He then capped off the day by lifting 500 pounds in deadlift, breaking the previous national record for his age group by 40 pounds.

Baker’s performance was enough to win the state meet in dominant fashion and become the best pound-for-pound lifter this year. He said he now has his sights set on competing at the national level.

“It’s crazy that I got this far,” Baker said. “I never knew that I had this much potential in me, but the first thing I tell myself is just believe in yourself and I think it’s incredible that I broke these records. But moving forward there’s more that needs to be done.”

Baker plans to compete in a Canadian national tournament in October.
