T.C. Central’s Lober Reflects on 52-Year Coaching Career

TRAVERSE CITY — After 52 years as the Traverse City Central boys track and field head coach, John Lober stepped down at the end of this spring season.

He coached the program to 135 invitational titles, 21 league crowns, 11 regional titles and the 1992 Class A state championship.

Lober said the best part of the job was the joy he got out of coaching many student athletes throughout the years.

“57 years in the business and about 25 years ago, I realize that this is why I’m here. This is why I’m breathing. I’m here to be a coach, to help people, but it’s bringing it all back to me and the joy that I get,” Lober said. “It makes my life so much richer. These relationships and it’s all been through the sport of track and field that this has all happened, so it’s a pure joy.”

Lober said that he will still plan on being a part of the program in many other ways.
