Charlevoix’s Hankins Signs with South East Melbourne Phoenix

Charlevoix native and former Ferris State star center Zach Hankins will be continuing his professional basketball career with the South East Melbourne Phoenix of Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL).

Hankins, 25, will be playing for his third professional team overseas, recently played for Maccabi Rishon LeZion of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. He signed a one-year deal with the Phoenix.


With Maccabi Rishon LeZion, Hankins averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Prior to playing with Maccabi Rishon LeZion, Hankins played his first professional season with Nymburk Basketball of the Czech Republic’s National Basketball League.


As a member Nymburk Basketball, Hankins averaged 12.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.

Hankins played with the Philadelphia 76ers summer league team in the 2019 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. He led Ferris State to a 38-1 finish and their first NCAA Division II national championship in 2017-18 and was named the 2018 National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II National Player of the Year. Hankins completed his collegiate career as a graduate transfer with NCAA Division I Xavier University in 2018-19. Hankins adjusted well to Division I basketball, leading the Big East Conference and breaking the Xavier single-season record in field goal percentage.
