CMU Running Back Duo Lewis, Nichols Named to Doak Walker Award Watch List

MT. PLEASANT — In two seasons at Central Michigan, Jim McElwain has helped the Chippewas feature one of the top running games in the Mid-American Conference.

In 2019 Jonathan Ward and Kobe Lewis both rushed for more than 1,000 yards each. And then last year, CMU ranked third in rushing yards per game.

The expectations are high once again as Central Michigan had two players make the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the best running back at the end of the college football season.

Kobe Lewis and Lew Nichols are expected to once again lead the CMU rushing attack after they were both in the top 10 in the conference last season with more than 900 rushing yards combined in just six games.

Lewis and Nichols are two of six MAC running backs on the watch list, joining Eastern Michigan’s Darius Boone, Buffalo’s Kevin Marks, Northern Illinois’ Harrison Waylee and Toledo’s Bryant Kodak.

Central Michigan opens up its 2021 season on Spet. 4 against Missouri.
