Pickford Community Remembers Chuck Bennin
PICKFORD — Chuck Bennin, a pillar in the Pickford community, passed away on July 8. He was 73 years old.
Bennin had a strong impact on athletics in Pickford, whether it was during his time as a star athlete in high school or becoming the school’s longtime athletic director.
He was a member of the 1965 Pickford basketball team which made a trip to the state semifinals, and he also was named to the All-Tournament team.
After high school, he coached multiple junior high teams and the varsity boys basketball team, leading three different teams to regionals along with the 1992 team that made it to the state semis.
Bennin then became the athletic director at Pickford, where he left a strong impact on everyone he worked with.
“That was the thing with Chuck. It was always about the kids,” Pickford JV football coach Dan Rye said. “You could have a mad parent or upset coach and he’d sit you down in the office and say, ‘What is in the best interest of the kid?'”
“The most impressive thing with Chuck was that he found time to do all that and be a fantastic family man,” Pickford athletic director Mike Collins said. “He raised fantastic kids and he has a handful of amazing grandkids here carrying on his legend here in Pickford.”
There will be a memorial service for Bennin on Thursday at the Presbyterian Church in Pickford. More information can be found on the funeral home’s website.
