Pistons Select Cunningham with No. 1 Overall Pick in NBA Draft
DETROIT — The Detroit Pistons entered the 2021 NBA Draft with the No. 1 overall pick on Thursday night and selected Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham.
Cunningham, the 19-year-old 6-foot-8 guard from Dallas, was the anticipated first pick of the Pistons being the best player in this year’s draft.
This was the first time since 1970 the Pistons have had the top overall pick, when they took Bob Lanier.
Cunningham played one season at Oklahoma State and is the highest draft pick in the university’s history.
As First-Team All-American, he averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.6 steals.
The Pistons also have three picks in the second round including the 37th, 42nd and 52nd overall selections.
