Pit Spitters Win 2021 Northwoods League Championship

ST. CLOUD, MINN. — The Pit Spitters won their second straight Northwoods League title with a 9-3 victory over the St. Cloud Rox on Friday.

St. Cloud got on the scoreboard first with an RBI double by Jack Steil to left field, which scored Bobby Goodloe in the second inning to give them the 1-0 lead.

T.C. responded in the fourth, with Zeb Roos tying the game up with a base hit to right field to score Evan Maday. Later in the inning, T.C. pulled off a double steal to score Trey Yunger to give them the 2-1 lead.

Traverse City held a 6-3 lead in the eighth inning when Mario Camilletti added some insurance runs with a 2-run homer to left field.

The Pit Spitters won the 2019 Northwoods League title in their first year in the league. The league did not have a championship last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Traverse City went 42-29 in the regular season, finishing second overall in the Great Lakes East division. They won the first half of the season to secure a playoff spot at 21-15 at the time.

The Pit Spitters won their first playoff game at home on Aug. 15, 9-2. They lost the second game of the three-game series, 3-0, but managed to win game three, 9-6, to advance. They defeated the Madison Mallards at home in the Divisional Championship on Aug. 18, 6-2.
