CMU Adds Men’s Golf Program Beginning in 2022-23 Season

Central Michigan University announced Thursday that it will start a men’s golf program beginning in the 2022-23 season.

With the addition of men’s golf, CMU will offer 17 sports program (11 women, six men) and now meets the NCAA Division I FBS sport sponsorship requirements after CMU was granted a waiver by the NCAA to drop below the minimum number of men’s sports the past two years. CMU eliminated its men’s indoor and outdoor track and field program last May – a decision that impacted 36 student-athletes and called for the elimination of two full-time assistant coaching positions.

“I am excited to add men’s golf, a program that will fit well into our sport offerings. This program is well-positioned for success in the future based on the strong resources available in our community and in our state,” said Amy Folan, CMU Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics.

Men’s golf was previously offered as a varsity sport at CMU in 1936 and was discontinued after the 1984-85 season. CMU competed in the Mid-American Conference from 1973 to 1985. CMU is the ninth MAC program to sponsor men’s golf.

“We have been working diligently toward this goal since I joined CMU 10 months ago. The financial challenges that forced changes in the sports we sponsor remain,” Folan said.

“Our top priority is to offer programs that provide an exceptional experience for our student-athletes. I feel strongly we will be able to do this with our men’s golf program based on the financial parameters necessary for a successful program. We are fortunate to have so many fantastic golf courses locally and statewide, which will make this an attractive program for prospective student-athletes.”

CMU will immediately begin a national coaching search and will start the process to identify local practice and competition venues.
