Controlling the Tempo is Key for Ludington in 2021

LUDINGTON – While many area football programs are dealing with declining participation numbers, Ludington is an exception.

The Orioles have nearly 60 players between its JV and varsity teams.

Coach Charlie Gunsell says the high participation numbers allows him and his coaching staff to put his players in more game-like situations in practice.

“We get pretty good looks every night,” Gunsell said. “We’ve had a couple of live sessions already getting ready for the scrimmage on Thursday. So I think early in the year we’re going to have to rely on that defense. They’re going to have to slow people down because offensively we’re real young and it may take us awhile to get our feet underneath us.”

Ludington recorded its first-ever playoff victory last fall with a win over Bay City John Glenn. The Orioles also suffered a pair of losses on the last play of the game, including a 21-20 loss to rival Manistee.

“Couldn’t really hold on to the ball a lot last year,” senior Wilson Gunsell said. “Time of possession wasn’t the best so if we can keep the ball in our hands we should be able to win some games.”

Ludington opens its season on the road at Fremont on Friday, Aug. 27.
