DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings have been busy this offseason, making big trades before the NHL Draft and agreeing to a wide range of signings in the early days of free agency.
The Red Wings signed forward Pius Suter and defenseman Jordan Oesterle when free agency opened last Wednesday.
Suter, 25, tallied 14 goals and 13 assists as a rookie for the Chicago Blackhawks last season. Red Wings fans may remember Suter scoring his first three NHL goals in a hat trick performance against Detroit in January.
Oesterle, 29, has played in parts of seven NHL seasons. He scored one goal and added 10 assists in 43 games with the Arizona Coyotes last season.
On Saturday, the Red Wings announced the re-signing of Tyler Bertuzzi to a two-year contract. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Bertuzzi played in just nine games last season due to injury but is one of the main faces of the team’s rebuild.
Darren Helm left the Red Wings to sign a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche. Helm, 34, played with the Red Wings for 14 seasons and was the last remaining player from the team that won the 2008 Stanley Cup.
A pair of trades before the NHL Draft represent the other big moves for the Red Wings this offseason.
Detroit acquired goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic from the Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Jonathan Bernier and a third-round draft pick.
Nedeljkovic had a 15-5-3 record as a rookie in 2020-21 for the Hurricanes. He finished third in the Calder Memorial Trophy voting, which is the NHL’s Rookie of the Year trophy.
In mid-July, the Red Wings also announced a trade with the New York Islanders to acquire defenseman Nick Leddy for right winger Richard Panik and a second round pick.
In addition to these moves, the Red Wings re-signed defensemen Marc Staal and Gustav Lindstrom and forward Taro Hirose from last year’s team.
Lastly, the team acquired forward Mitchell Stephens from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2022 sixth round pick and signed longtime Grand Rapids Griffin Brian Lashoff to a one-year deal.
