Top 5 Area Games: Week 1

Week 1 of the 2021 high school football season in northern Michigan features a pair of games at the Big House and a stellar 8-player matchup in Pickford.

Thursday, Aug. 26
Reed City (0-0) at Cadillac (0-0), 7 p.m. – A matchup of former conference rivals, this marks the first meeting between these two since 1996. The Vikings made history a year ago by reaching a state championship game for the first time in school history. The Coyotes went 9-0 last season before having to forfeit a Division 5 regional final because of COVID-19 issues within the program.
Cadillac leads the series at 24-6 since 1950.

Thursday, Aug. 26
DeWitt (0-0) vs. Traverse City Central (0-0) at Ann Arbor (Big House), 7 p.m. – Part of the 2021 Battle at the Big House, DeWitt captured its first-ever state championship last season with a 40-30 win over River Rogue while Central made a state semifinal appearance for the first time since winning the 1988 Class A title. DeWitt won the only previous meeting 31-26 in 2019.

Thursday, Aug. 26
Midland (0-0) vs. Traverse City West (0-0) at Ann Arbor (Big House), 3:30 p.m. – Another contest in the 2021 Battle at the Big House series, these two are no strangers, having opened the season against each other now eight times since 2013. West leads the all-time series at 4-3. The Chemics won the last meeting 28-20 in 2019.

Friday, Aug. 27
Gaylord St. Mary (0-0) at Pickford (0-0), 7 p.m. – A meeting of two premier 8-player teams in northern Michigan, these two last met in 2019 with Pickford coming away with a 46-23 win. Both teams figure once again to be in contention for lengthy postseason runs. Pickford leads the all-time series at 3-2.

Friday, Aug. 27
Sault Ste. Marie (0-0) at St. Ignace (0-0), 7 p.m. – This is the first meeting in the series since 2013. The Blue Devils are coming off back-to-back district finals appearances while the Saints return nine starters including junior quarterback Reece McLean. The Saints are 14-11 all-time against Sault Ste. Marie.
