Where Are They Now: Traverse City West’s Emily Baumann
TRAVERSE CITY — Emily (Lovejoy) Baumann moved to Traverse City before her freshman year of high school, never having played much volleyball previously.
As a freshman in 1997, she quickly excelled and was moved up to the varsity volleyball team halfway through the season. She officially made the team her sophomore year.
In her junior year in 2000, the Titans advanced to the Class A state finals, the first state championship appearance in the program’s history. TC West fell short in the final game to East Kentwood.
The following year, the team made a trip to the state semifinals in 2001.
After her graduation from West, she received a full-ride scholarship to play at Central Michigan University.
In her time at CMU she was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team, All-MAC Second Team, set the kills records for the most in four and five sets with 30 and 36 in 2004, ranks second in single-season kills with 496, second in kills per set, second in season points and points per-set, second in sets played and ranks first in attacks with 1,497 in the 2002 season.
She also holds the career kills record with 1,791, kills per set at 3.98, career attacks with 4,89, career points with 1,959.0 and career points per set.
Her resume is impressive to say the least.
While in her fifth year at Central Michigan she was called back to Traverse City West and asked to be the head coach of the volleyball program.
As one of the youngest head coaches in northern Michigan, she quickly led the Titans to success in her first stint. TC West won the Big North Conference and district title, reaching the Class A state semifinals in 2005.
“I love it, I absolutely love it. I have 16 years this year and I’ve had most of them since they were little freshman and it’s just been an awesome experience to watch them grow and help develop them and just their personalities and getting to know them on and off the court, it’s just been such an awesome experience,” said Baumann.
After stepping down from the head coaching role 2007, Baumann returned to take over the program in 2012.
Since then she has led the Titans to three Big North Conference titles, six district championships and two regional crowns.
Baumann met her husband while working at Traverse City West, boys varsity basketball coach Doug Baumann, who is 1997 Traverse City Central graduate.
Doug Baumann most recently coached West’s girls basketball team from 2017 through 2019.
