Cheboygan’s PJ Maybank III Commits to Oklahoma for Golf

CHEBOYGAN – One of the most dominant high school golfers in northern Michigan, Cheboygan junior PJ Maybank III, verbally committed to continue his golf career at Oklahoma University last month.

“I really, really wanted Oklahoma and I fit very well with the coach and the team and I just loved everything about it to be honest and after they offered me I took it right away,” said Maybank III. “I’m hoping I continue to play well and can help them win a national championship. It’s really one of my big time goals is to win a college national championship, individually and team and I’m hoping I can help them do that.”

The 16-year-old phenom is coming off an impressive summer, winning an MHSAA Division 3 individual state title in June, repeating as the Michigan Junior State Amateur Champion in July and most recently winning the AJGA Ronny Wise open in August.

His score of 9 under at the LP state finals was the lowest score ever in a state tournament round for Div. 3.

Maybank III was named the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association’s 2021 Mr. Golf.

He was also the winner of the Drive, Chip and Putt before the Masters Tournament as a 13-year-old. He’s also won several junior tournaments with the Golf Association of Michigan and other traveling golf circuits.

Maybank III will graduate from Cheboygan High School in 2023.
