McBain NMC Retakes Control of First Place in Win Over Gladwin
GLADWIN — McBain NMC picked up a 2-0 victory over Gladwin on Wednesday in boys soccer, helping the Comets regain control of first place in the Northern Michigan Soccer League.
Mekhi Harris and Jonas Lanser scored the two goals in the game, with Trevin Winkle and Seth VanHaitsma adding assists.
“I liked our attacking intent,” NMC head coach Taylor Mulder said. “We went for goal more than we have been and that’s kind of where we’ve been struggling is scoring goals. So we got some on the board tonight and that’s what we’re hoping for.”
Gladwin had won six straight games to move into a tie for first place, but the Flying G’s were down four starters on Wednesday due to illness and two athletes competing for the cross country team.
Adding to the challenge, a red card in the first five minutes of the game forced Gladwin to play with 10 players on the field for the final 75 minutes.
“I feel for them because obviously playing a man down you don’t want to have that. You want to play a fair game. But for us we were just continuing to attack the offense and defense and put some goals in,” Winkle said.
NMC suffered its first loss last week in a game against Ogemaw Heights to fall back into a tie for first with the Flying G’s. With the win on Wednesday, NMC improves to 10-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference. Gladwin falls to 8-2 in the conference and 10-3-1 overall.
