Top 5 Area Games: Week 3

Week 3 of the 2021 high school football season in northern Michigan features one of the oldest rivalries in the state and several pivotal conference openers.

Friday, Sept. 10
Ludington (1-1, 0-0 Lakes 8) at Manistee (1-1, 0-0 Lakes 8), 7 p.m. – This marks the 144th meeting all-time in a series that ranks as one of the longest running in state history. Manistee picked up its first win a week ago with a 28-14 victory over Westland Lutheran while Ludington fell to Sparta. Manistee held on for a thrilling 21-20 win in last year’s meeting. The Orioles lead the all-time series at 69-63-11.

Friday, Sept. 10
Traverse City West (2-0, 0-0 Big North) at Cadillac (2-0, 0-0 Big North), 7 p.m. – Cadillac is 2-0 for the second straight year and looking for its third straight league-opening win. This marks the first time since 2013 that West has opened Big North Conference play with an opponent not named Traverse City Central. The Titans have won six straight in the series. West is 18-6 all-time against Cadillac.

Friday, Sept. 10
Kingsley (2-0, 0-0 NMFL Legends) at Sault Ste. Marie (2-0, 1-0 NMFL Legends), 7 p.m. – Sault Ste. Marie is 2-0 to the start the year for a third straight season and has outscored its first two opponents 79-0. Kingsley has been equally as impressive, outscoring opponents 102-8, including a 48-0 win over Glen Lake last week. The Stags are 5-2 all-time against Sault Ste. Marie, with the Blue Devils last winning in 2013.

Friday, Sept. 10
Glen Lake (1-1) at Boyne City (2-0), 7 p.m. –  Boyne City is fresh off an impressive 27-8 win over Charlevoix last week while Glen Lake is looking to rebound from a 48-0 defeat at the hands of Kingsley. The Lakers won last year’s meeting 22-6 and lead the all-time series at 6-3.

Friday, Sept. 10
Tri County (2-0, 1-0 CSAA Gold) at Reed City (1-1, 1-0 CSAA Gold), 7 p.m. – Tri County last beat Reed City in 2003, but is 2-0 for the second time since 2019 after reaching a Division 5 district final a year ago. The Vikings have already outscored opponents 92-7 while the Coyotes opened conference play with a 28-0 win over Grant last week. Reed City is 10-2 all-time against Tri County.
