Top 5 Area Games: Week 4

Week 4 of the 2021 high school football season in northern Michigan features the annual Traverse City Patriot Game and key games atop the Highland and Jack Pine Conferences.

Friday, Sept. 17
D2 No. 10 Traverse City Central (2-1, 1-0 Big North) vs. Traverse City West (3-0, 1-0 Big North), 7 p.m. – The annual Traverse City Patriot Game, both teams opened Big North Conference play with big wins a week ago. Central has won back-to-back meetings including a 53-13 victory a year ago. West leads the all-time series at 14-12.

Friday, Sept. 17
Mesick (2-1, 2-0 West Michigan D) at 8P No. 7 Marion (3-0, 2-0 West Michigan D), 7 p.m. – Marion is 3-0 for the first time since 1997. Mesick has won three straight in the series. A win here would put the victor on a clear path to a West Michigan D League championship. The Eagles lead the all-time series at 13-3.

Friday, Sept. 17
Munising (2-1, 2-1 Great Lakes East) at Newberry (3-0, 2-0 Great Lakes East), 7 p.m. – Newberry is 3-0 for the second time since 2019 and faces its first test in a matchup of Great Lakes 8 East newcomers. Munising’s lone loss is a 40-36 defeat to Pickford in Week 2. Munising has largely dominated the series, going 50-18-1 against Newberry since 1950. The Mustangs won last year’s meeting 40-0.

Friday, Sept. 17
D6 No. 8 Lake City (3-0, 2-0 Highland) at D8 No. 7 Beal City (2-1, 2-0 Highland), 7 p.m. – Both teams enter Friday’s contest fresh of dominant Week 3 wins. The Aggies face another tough matchup next week against undefeated Evart. These two did not meet last year during the COVID-shortened season. Beal City on the 2019 meeting, snapping a two-game skid against Lake City. Beal City leads the series at 42-19 since 1950.

Friday, Sept. 17
Shepherd (2-1, 2-0 Jack Pine) at Clare (2-1, 2-0 Jack Pine), 7 p.m. – These two schools along with Gladwin are the lone remaining undefeated teams after two weeks of Jack Pine Conference play. After a season-opening loss to Freeland, Clare followed up with wins over Sanford Meridian (61-6) and Beaverton (42-7) while Shepherd also recorded wins over Beaverton (26-7) and Sanford Meridian (50-12). Clare won last year’s meeting 45-0. Shepherd leads the all-time series at 23-14 since 1950.
