Big Rapids Beats Manistee for District Title

BIG RAPIDS – Big Rapids beat Manistee 1-0 on Thursday night to win the district championship in boys soccer for the first time since 2017.

“It’s been a few years. The guys have been working real hard. We knew it was going to be a tough, tough road this week but they came through,” said Big Rapids head coach Justin Fox.

The only goal of the night came midway through the first half off a Big Rapids free kick. Brady Fox played the ball into the box, it was deflected off the post and found its way to senior Lukas Timm, who put it in the back of the net to give Big Rapids the lead.

“After moving here from Montana. I’m new here and we never had district finals [there] so the pressure was really on and after scoring that, it felt really good,” said Timm.

Junior goalkeeper Brock Smith made several key saves down the stretch and earned the clean sheet. Smith has only been the Cardinals’ starting goalkeeper for a few weeks.

“Going into regionals now as a starting keeper. It’s just amazing for me and I’m just grateful for every opportunity that I get,” said Smith.

When the Cardinals won the district title in 2017, they played Ogemaw Heights in the first round of regionals. They will play Ogemaw Heights in regionals again this year.

The game between Ogemaw Heights (17-3) and Big Rapids (16-3-4) is scheduled for Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in Clare.

Manistee ends its season with a 9-13 record.
