Buckley Beats North Bay by One to Advance to District Finals

BUCKLEY – After a scoreless second half, Buckley held on to defeat North Bay 2-1 in the Div. 4 district semifinal Monday night and advance to its first district finals since 2018.

“We’d beaten them twice in the season. So, to come in here, they gave us everything they had. That second half, it was tight. It was super tight. So, we’ve got work to do. Now it’s all about one and done. You just have to keep going and thankfully for us, we get to play again on Thursday,” said Buckley head boys soccer coach John Vermilya.

“It’s a ‘win or go’ home game. It’s such a great feeling. And of course we look forward to play that game and try to be able to be district champions,” said Buckley senior Lorenzo Tognetti.

Buckley saw its first postseason action on Monday after going undefeated in the Northwest Conference (10-0) and earning a first round bye after clinching its first conference title since 1999.

The win over North Bay marks the ninth straight for the Bears this season.

Buckley (15-4-1) will seek its first district finals win since 2017 when the team made it all the way to the state semifinals. They will face Leland in the district championship on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Harbor Springs.
