Elk Rapids Beats Ogemaw Heights to Win Second Straight Regional Championship

CLARE – Elk Rapids beat Ogemaw Heights 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to capture the regional championship for a second consecutive season in boys soccer.

Spencer Ball scored about a minute into the game and that would prove to be all the scoring the Elks would need.

“I’m so proud of that group right there,” Elk Rapids head coach Nate Plum said after the game. “We graduated a lot of guys last year and for them to put the pieces together again and still come out and be able to get things done, that says a lot.”

Elk Rapids dominated possession for much of the game and limited Ogemaw Heights to few scoring chances. Ogemaw Heights finishes the season 20-4 with a district championship to its credit.

Elk Rapids advances to the Division 3 state semifinals. Last season, the Elks lost in the semis to Grand Rapids South Christian 2-1 in penalty kicks.

They will get a rematch with the Sailors in this year’s state semifinals. South Christian beat Delton Kellog 8-0 in its regional championship game Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve got to be composed in that state semifinal,” said Elk Rapids junior Spencer Ball. “We were there last year and couldn’t get it done, unlucky. But we still have fight for this year and hopefully we will get it done this year.”

The game between South Christian and Elk Rapids is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:00 in Cedar Springs.

Flint Powers Catholic and Grosse Ile will meet in the other Division 3 semifinal.
