Harbor Springs Girls Golf Wins Conference Again, Prepares for Regionals
HARBOR SPRINGS – Harbor Springs has established itself as one of the best girls golf programs in Northern Michigan. But this year’s team has no seniors and four of the seven players are golfing for the first time this season.
Even so, Harbor Springs won the conference championship again last week by one stroke.
They now prepare for regionals on Tuesday. The top three from the regional get into the state championship and the Rams feel they can crack that top three if they can relax on the course.
“That’s our challenge,” said head coach Pete Kelbel. “We could be anywhere — we’re rated around four — but we could be anywhere from third to fifth so we’re going to work hard and see if we can sneak into the state championship.”
“A lot of [the younger players] get worried and stuff and at the end of the day it’s just golf. You can’t really stress about it or anything. It’s a good sport, it’s fun and it’s only fun if you let it be fun,” said junior Natalie Mills.
Chippewa Hills and defending state champion Montague are two of the top teams in the state and are in the same regional as the Rams.
Harbor Springs finished seventh in the state last season.
