Petoskey’s Postseason Run Ends in Regional Final

CEDAR SPRINGS — The Petoskey boys soccer team had its postseason run end in the Div. 2 regional final against Grand Rapids Christian on Thursday with a 2-0 loss.

The Northmen competed well against an Eagle team that features Michigan commit Nick Cassiday, holding them scoreless through the first half. But with 21 minutes to go in the game, Cassiday found the back of the net to give them the 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, they added another goal off a header by Ben Kuiper.

Petoskey was playing in its first regional final since 2017, coming off a regional semifinal where they defeated Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central in a shootout.

“Just an incredible group of student athletes and they represented our community so well all season. Hats off to Grand Rapids Christian. It was a great battle,” Petoskey head coach Zach Jonker said. “They have one really special player and he made a big play and we know they score in bunches and boom-boom, it’s 2-0. But I was really proud of the fact that we kept playing and we created a couple of chances there late.”

Petoskey ends its season with a 17-4-3 record, with all four of their losses coming against teams that made appearances in their respective regional tournaments.
