Three Local Individual Golfers Advance to States
CADILLAC — Three local individual golfers advanced to the state finals in Div. 3 with solid performances on Tuesday at the Cadillac Country Club.
Ludington sophomore Emma McKinley recorded an 86 to finish in third place and advance. Right behind her was Grant sophomore Nadia Zerlaut, whose 88 was good enough to send her to the state finals. Big Rapids senior Kiali Stout also earned a trip to the state finals with a top five finish and a score of 90.
“I was proud of how I played an pushed through. I use Tiger Woods’ strategies from my coach, just kinda taking deep breaths and walking slow and just keeping my pace,” McKinley said.
“I’m pretty happy. I feel like I played pretty well. There was some bad holes, but there was some good holes as well. I’m really happy,” Zerlaut said.
Whitehall’s Karli Vanduinen won the regional with a 77. Forest Hills Eastern won the regional as a team with a score of 368. Whitehall and Spring Lake also finished in the top three to advance. Ludington finished in fourth place, while Cadillac finished tied for fifth with Big Rapids.
“I’m proud of myself for making it through today, but I’m proud of my team as well and I’m happy for all of us right now,” Stout said. “I’m really excited that my golf season does get to continue and that today isn’t my last tournament.”
In other regionals on Tuesday, Cheboygan advanced to states with a third place finish in Div. 3. They had a team score of 403, led by Katie Maybank’s 92 and Jenna Webber’s 94.
In Div. 4, Chippewa Hills and Traverse City St. Francis advanced to the state finals with second and third place finishes, respectively. Montague won the regional.
Grace Slocum led the Gladiators by finishing in second place individually. The freshman recorded an 85. Chippewa Hills had three golfers in the top 10, including freshman Madison Allen placing third with an 86.
Individually, East Jordan’s Sami Burks, Lakeview’s Jenna Voelker and Manistee’s Kendal Waligorski all advanced to the state finals.
