CMU’s Lew Nichols Caps Off Regular Season as Nation’s Leading Rusher in FBS
MT. PLEASANT – Central Michigan running back Lew Nichols III recorded an impressive 2021 regular season, ending the year as the nation’s leading rusher with 1,710 total rushing yards, 2,010 all-purpose yards and 311 carries.
He sits in front of Michigan State phenom and Heisman Trophy contender Kenneth Walker III (Jr.), who has 1,614 rushing yards and 18 scores on the ground.
Nichols also ranks first in rushing yards per game with 142.5 and is 10th in the country with 15 total rushing touchdowns.
The reigning MAC Freshman of the Year rushed for 194 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 44 carries and caught two passes for 39 yards, giving him 233 all-purpose yards in Saturday’s 31-10 win over Eastern Michigan.
His 1,710 yards are the second most in a season by a Chippewa running back and his 311 rushing attempts are third in program history.
While Nichols is tabbed as a redshirt freshman, he will become draft eligible after this year thanks to the NCAA’s waiver covering last season’s COVID-impacted season.
Central Michigan finished the season 8-4 overall and 6-2 in Mid-American Conference play. The Chippewas now await a bowl game invitation.
