McBain Volleyball Gets Ready for Friday’s Div. 3 State Semifinal
McBAIN – The McBain volleyball team is in the Division 3 state semifinals for the first time since 2009. The Ramblers secured an impressive quarterfinal win over Calumet in five sets on Tuesday, setting up Friday’s semifinal against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.
Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central has won the state championship each of the past two years. But McBain coach Shawn Murphy said the Falcons are high school players who make errors just like every other team, and he’s hopeful his Ramblers can capitalize on those mistakes while minimizing their own.
McBain senior Jersey Scott said the team just needs to continue to play to its full potential, as it has all postseason long.
“I think we just need to do what we’ve been doing. The grit we have as a team, coming back when we’re down so far is amazing. So we have to keep that up,” she said. “And then staying strong in our net with blocking and hitting and our serve-receive, that’s going to be really critical in these next games.”
Murphy said he’s had confidence this team would reach this point all season long.
“I told this group that if we don’t make the final four, then I messed up as a coach because we have all of the tools to get there and I’m excited [to get down there],” Murphy said.
Friday’s semfinal against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The winner will advance to the state championship game against the winner of Muskegon Western Michigan Christian vs. Reese.
