No. 1 TC St. Francis’ Season Ends in State Semifinals Against Pewamo-Westphalia

CEDAR SPRINGS – After nearly pulling off a late fourth-quarter comeback, first-ranked Traverse City St. Francis’ undefeated season ended in the Division 7 state semifinal with a 28-21 loss to second-ranked Pewamo-Westphalia at Cedar Springs on Saturday.

After TCSF tied the game 14-14 in the third quarter, Pewamo-Westphalia scored two unanswered touchdowns to extend the lead 28-14.

The Gladiators then notched a late passing strike from Charlie Peterson to Wyatt Nausadis to come within seven points with one minute to go in the game.

St. Francis’ onside kick was successful to regain possession, but their game-tying drive was stopped short after a Pirates interception.

The Gladiators made their second straight semifinal appearance following last year’s state finals run where they fell to New Lothrop 42-35.

It was also rematch of the 2016 regional final, which the Pirates won 17-14 on their way to the state championship that season.

St. Francis made it to the semifinal game for the fifth time in the program’s last seven seasons. They end an impressive 2021 campaign with a 12-1 record.

Pewamo-Westphalia (13-0) advances to take on Lawton (13-0) in the Division 7 state championship game on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. at Ford Field in Detroit.
