North Central Michigan College Announces Athletic Program Expansion
North Central Michigan College announced Thursday the addition of six varsity athletic programs.
The six teams will begin competition in the National Junior College Athletic Association during the 2022-23 academic year. North Central is adding volleyball, esports, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s cross country.
“Expanding our athletic program is another step in enhancing the student-life experience on campus,” said NCMC Athletic Director Ashley Antonishen. “It’s also a great opportunity for athletes locally and statewide to continue playing the sport they love as North Central Timberwolves while receiving an exceptional NCMC education.”
The NJCAA’s board of regents unanimously approved North Central’s application in late October. North Central will compete in NJCAA Region 12, which includes 33 colleges from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Following a one-year probationary period, the Timberwolves will be eligible for postseason competition in fall 2023.
Located in Petoskey, with learning centers in Gaylord and Cheboygan, North Central launched a club sports program in 2019, with offerings in cross country, downhill ski racing and esports.
North Central will apply to join the 20-member Michigan Community College Athletic Association.
