Sault Ste. Marie Aims to Take Next Step in Girls Basketball
SAULT STE. MARIE — The Sault Ste. Marie girls basketball put together another great basketball season last year, winning 14 of 16 games including a district title. This year, the Blue Devils want to take the next step.
They return six players from that team, ready to start the program’s 17th year under head coach Pat Bennin.
Last year marked their second straight year of winning a district title before losing to Escanaba in the regional semifinals. They didn’t get a chance to compete in their regional final in 2020 due to COVID-19. So the Blue Devils are hungry to pick up that first regional title since 2000.
“It’s a total different season now that we have a lot more time to get ready,” Bennin said. “The big thing is that they learned that they might have to compete at a little bit of a higher level. We’re going to have to pick up defensive intensity a little bit. We learned a few things from playing Escanaba. But you know, it’s a new year and we’ll be ready to go.”
The Blue Devils two losses last year came against Marquette in the regular season and Escanaba in regionals. They will start their season right away with challenges, taking on Escanaba at home on Dec. 3 and Marquette on the road on Dec. 7.
