Sault Ste. Marie Hockey Features Young, Fast Team

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Sault Ste. Marie hockey team started its fourth season under head coach Rick Mackie with a win and a tie last weekend. The Blue Devils hope to improve once again like they have every year with Mackie, including last year’s 6-6 record which included a playoff victory.

They lost five seniors from last year’s team, but Mackie said the young players have stepped it up and they are expecting to play with some speed this season.

“It’s definitely more of the direction we want to go, especially with the way we are playing,” Mackie said. “We’re fast. We have six D that can play in all situations. Really pleased with our goaltending. All in all, we’re really deep up front. We’re deep on the back end. In net, we’re fine. I’m excited about the opportunity to watch these guys play.”

Their next game will be Friday against East Grand Rapids.
