St. Ignace Returns Young Team in Girls Hoops

ST. IGNACE — The St. Ignace girls basketball team lost to Calumet in overtime last season in the regional final, snapping a streak of 10 straight wins in regional final games. The Saints made their 12th straight appearance in the regional final, as they were unable to play in 2020.

Dorene Ingalls is back for her 23rd year coaching the Saints, but they will look to replace a pair of four-year starters in Emmalee Hart and Hallie Marshall. Ally Schultz is the lone starter back on the team. Allison Cece is also back after seeing significant playing time as a freshman off the bench. Ingalls doesn’t think her young team will go through a rebuild.

“I would rather call it building them up, you know, building up, gaining confidence, putting them in spots that they’re not used to,” Ingalls said. “I think they’re only going to get better from it, and they’re really devoted to get better every single day. And great kids. They work hard and we’re just going to try to make our best better every day.”

St. Ignace will open up its season against Charlevoix, another program that has performed well in recent years. That game will start on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in St. Ignace.
