Young Roster Takes the Ice for Traverse City West Hockey This Season

TRAVERSE CITY – The high school hockey season is already underway and Traverse City West is off to a fast 3-0 start. The Titans will rely on young talent from their 10 returners this year after graduating 12 seniors.

“It’s super important to get these young guys, take them under our wings and get them up to speed as fast as possible because we’re gonna be needing them a lot this year. Super high expectations. Right now we’re taking it one game at a time,” said Traverse City West senior Michael Schermerhorn.

“We’re excited. It’s great to be back in the rink. We have a lot of new guys that are learning things, but their attitudes have been great,” said Traverse City West head hockey coach Jeremy Rintala. “But, we got a lot of work replacing those guys that we lost from last year. So, we’re gonna need a lot of leadership in the locker room.”

Following last season’s tough 4-3 two-overtime loss to Rockford in the regional finals, TC West is looking to make it back to that game again this year.

The Titans are currently undefeated after opening up the 2021-22 campaign with a 5-2 win over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central. Their last two victories game against Farmington and Northville.

TC West is outscoring its opponents 16-3 thus far.

Traverse City West will host Grosse Pointe South (2-1-1) in its next game on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Howe Ice Arena at 1 p.m.
