Johnston Given Wooden Legacy Award by NHSBCA

BEAVERTON — Beaverton boys basketball head coach Roy Johnston was one of two coaches in the state of Michigan to receive the 2021 John Wooden Legacy Award from the National High School Basketball Coaches Association.

Johnston has the most wins in state history by a boys basketball head coach, surpassing 800 victories last season. The award recognizes basketball coaches around the country who “are educators and have achieved excellence on the floor, in the classroom and in the community that further embody the characteristics and legacy of Coach John Wooden.”

The award also seeks five traits: Education, Longevity, Character, Service and Excellence. It’s the first year for the award and 78 people were honored in 41 states.

Beaverton is 2-3 this season and next plays on Thursday at home against Pinconning. The full list of honorees can be found on the coaches association’s website.
