MESICK – The Mesick boys basketball team surprised last season with an 11-6 finish and a share of a basketball conference championship for the first time in 39 years.
This year, they’re proving last season wasn’t a fluke. The Bulldogs are 7-0 and on Thursday they secured a dominating 73-45 win over Baldwin, the team they shared the conference title with last season.
Head coach Kyle Duby said he loves how hard this team works on both ends of the floor.
“I’m really proud of them. They come out here and we apply pressure. They know our defense and they execute well,” said Duby. “They share the ball on offense, this group is averaging 17 assists per game. I’m just really, really proud of the way they share the ball and get after it defensively.”
Mesick hit 15 threes in the game against Baldwin, a shooting performance that will be etched into the MHSAA record book (any team who hits 15+ threes in a game gets into the record book, the overall record for threes in a game is an incredible 29 by Whitmore Lake). But for all that’s going right, the Bulldogs still know there are areas they can improve.
“We’ve got to improve on attacking the rim more,” said sophomore Carter Simmer. “We’re good shooters, but we’ve got to attack the rim more and that will lead to more outside shots.”
Mesick will look to improve to 8-0 on Wednesday night when the Bulldogs play yet another road game — at Marion.
