No. 23 Ferris State Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 9 Minnesota Duluth in 2-OT Shootout

BIG RAPIDS – The No. 23 Ferris State men’s basketball team suffered a tough 109-107 loss to No. 9 and undefeated Minnesota Duluth in a double-overtime shootout at home on Sunday.

FSU outscored Duluth 45-41 in the second half as the game went back and forth down the stretch.

The FSU Bulldogs took an 88-86 lead with just 25 seconds left in regulation off a Ben Davidson clutch three-pointer. Minnesota responded with a bucket of its own to tie the game at 88 and send it to overtime.

After another back and forth battle in the first OT, in the second overtime senior guard Walt Kelser drained a three-pointer with just a few seconds to go to bring Ferris within two points.

UMD’s Jacob Shields missed a pair of free throws with three-tenths of a second left and a long three-quarter court heave by Ferris State came up short as time expired the second overtime.

The “Battle of the Bulldogs” contest was a late addition to the schedule for both teams after each had games cancelled this past week.

Ferris State starts 2022 with a loss, moving to 9-3 on the season. The Bulldogs will continue their three-game home stretch this week as they resume GLIAC play against Wayne State on Thursday, Jan. 6 with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
