Green Flag Start Kicks Off 53rd Running of I-500 Snowmobile Race

SAULT STE. MARIE — After a full week of events, the 53rd running of the I-500 kicked off Saturday morning with the traditional green flag start for the main race.

The official race is hosted on the only one-mile ice oval snowmobile track in North America and will feature 35 teams made up of hundreds of riders competing for the coveted annual win.

Saturday morning’s conditions were optimal for racing, with temperatures sitting at -2 degrees for the 10 a.m. start with light snow throughout the rest of the day.

The I-500 was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns. In 2020, Bunke Racing took home the title on what ended up being a muddy track due to high temperatures that year.
